Jacques Gernet

Jacques Gernet , born with Algiers the December 22nd 1921, is a Sinologue French.

He obtains a license of traditional letters with Algiers in 1942. Its studies are stopped by the war: he is mobilized between 1942 and 1945. He is then graduate of Chinese to the National school of the alive Eastern languages in 1947 and to the practical École of the high studies (EPHE) in 1948. He becomes member of the French École of the Far East, before being a researcher with the CNRS and stock-broker of the Yomiuri Shimbun with the Japan.

From 1955 to 1976, he is director of studies with the EPHE, VIe section, then with the École of the high studies in social sciences. He is arts doctor in 1956. He in parallel teaches the Chinese language and civilization with the Faculty of Arts of the Sorbonne in 1957, as an university lecturer, then reaches under professor in 1959. In 1968, it founds the Unit of teaching and research of the Languages and ages of Eastern Asia (Paris-VIi university), which it directs until 1973.

Lastly, it enters to the Collège de France, holder of the pulpit of social and intellectual history of China (1975-1992).

June 8th, 1979, he is elected ordinary member of the Académie of the Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres. He is knight of the Légion of honor, commander of the Ordre of the academic Palms
