Jacques Gauthier

Jacques Gauthier is a paleontologist of vertebrate, specialist in the Systémique and one of the promoters of the use of the Cladistique in paleontology.

Its career

It off accepted a baccalaureate science of Zoology to the Université of State de San Diego in 1973, a Master off Science of the same institute in 1980, and a PhD of Paléontologie of the the University of California to Berkeley, in 1984. He is currently professor of geology and geophysics and conservative of the sections of Paleontology and Zoology of vertebrate to the Université of Yale. Its thesis of license was the first analyzes cladistic major on the diapsides and opened a discussion in connection with the Monophylétique of the Dinosaure S.

It continued in this way with an important article on the fact that the Oiseau X resulted from the Théropode S. It was the first detailed cladistic analysis of the dinosaurs théropodes. It was at the origin of a revolution in the Phylogénétique of the dinosaurs which saw the cladistique one replacing the system of Carl von Linné in the classification of the species and a phylogenetic comprehension of the dinosaurs. Work of Gauthier in 1984 and 1986 are still fundamental references in the modern cladistic analysis of the diapsides and the dinausauriens.

More recently, Gauthier et al. applied the cladistic method to phylogeny of the amiote S by arguing in the direction of a taxonomic restriction of the tétrapode S on an extinct group. With Kevin de Queiroz, he proposed to replace the taxonomy binomial of Linné by the PhyloCode.
