Of a former family, it entered early the military career; it was already Brigadier in 1789, when it was appointed of the nobility of the bailliage of Touraine to the General states in 1789; it adopts the Révolution. Appointed secretary in December and president the March 31st 1790. Member of the diplomatic committee, employed after the session as brigadier to Paris, then with the Armed with the West.
It fights in the Vendée in 1793. Ordering sections of Paris at the meadow year, it forced the Faubourg Saint-Anthony to capitulate. General-in-chief of the army of the interior, denounced like traitor, put in judgment and discharged in 1795.
In 1798, it orders one of five divisions of the armed with the East at the time of the Campagne of Egypt. Major general to the armed with Egypt, it there showed much value, married a Moslem rich person and converts with the Islam and takes the name of Abdallah.
After the assassination of Jean-Baptiste Kléber, it succeeds to him the head of the Egypt as general-in-chief.
Menou, far from equalizing the large loved general of its men that was Kléber, was not supported at all by the other officers. It should be said that Menou, scorned by its men, made blunder on blunder (it did not hesitate, for example, with prénommer his son of the first name of the assassin of Kléber shortly after the death of this last).
The March 21st 1801, it takes the head of the French task force at the time of an ultimate battle with Aboukir to push back the English unloading which will show a defeat. After this battle, it is withdrawn with Alexandria, where it capitulates it.
At all events, Egypt had to be evacuated. Called with the Tribunat in 1802, administrator of the Piedmont, governor of the Tuscan in 1805, and finally governor of Venice.
Pointed out in France the July 23rd 1810, it died in the Villa Corneso, close Mestre (Italy) the August 13rd 1810.
The name of the Menou general is registered on the triumphal arch of Star, southern part.
