Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin , born with Saint-Dié the August 15th 1759 and died in Paris the April 13rd 1832, is a Portraitiste and Miniaturiste French.
Biography
Wire of a Master glazier, the young Augustin marks as of the childhood of the aptitudes for the drawing. Noticed by the intendant of the bishop of Saint-Dié, it leaves to study with Nancy near Jean-Baptiste Claudot and of Jean Girardet.In 1780, after a few months spent with Dijon, it settles in Paris. He works initially at Gatien Phlipon then manages to create important customers in the kind in vogue: the portrait in miniature. Fleeing Paris agitated by the Revolution, he travels to Brittany, Switzerland and Germany.
Of return to Paris, he marries the July 8th 1800 one of his pupils, Pauline Ducruet, 22 years his junior. This one, downward of Jean of the Fountain, will also carry out beautiful works in the style of her husband, of which a portrait of Pauline Bonaparte.
In 1806, Jacques Augustin becomes the official painter of the court. Its recognition survives the regime changes then that it becomes in 1814 ordinary painter of the king.
Member of the academy of painting in 1819, decorated with the legion of honor in 1820, it however sees himself supplanting near the king by a former student. The public forgets the large out-of-date but always productive Master then.
Reached drop, looked after with devotion by his wife, he dies in his 73e year, victim of the Choléra. He is buried with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise.
