Jacques-Alain Miller (born the February 14th 1944 with Chateauroux), is a philosopher (normalien) and psychoanalyst French of Polish origin.
Formation
Its philosophical formation starts at Sartre, with which it discusses, at the 16 years age.It passed by the National university of the street of Ulm (ENS). It followed, at the end of the Sixties, the seminars of Roland Barthes with the practical École of the high studies (ÉPHÉ). It is a disciple of the philosopher Louis Althusser, who was assistant with the ENS, and of the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan (of which he is the son-in-law - he married Judith Lacan - and the legatee). He is also the older brother of the psychoanalyst, writer and TV host Gerard Miller.
Career
Jacques-Alain Miller is director of the department of psychoanalysis of the Université of Paris VIII and ensures a public weekly course Wednesday afternoon the amphitheater of Arts and Métiers: “the orientation lacanienne” .He directed the École of the cause freudienne created by Jacques Lacan in 1981 and founded the Worldwide association of psychoanalysis in 1992. He publishes under his authority with the editions of the Seuil the texts of the Seminars of Jacques Lacan. Its talents of theorists, popularizer and writer, make a psychoanalyst impossible to circumvent of it of after Lacan. Heir to its teaching, the orientation which it gives to psychoanalytical research within the École of the cause freudienne preserves the promptness of the many inventions of the speech lacanien.
Jacques-Alain Miller finds in the Being and Nothing , the kojèvienne root of what founds later at Lacan, the theory of the subject: lack. When it rubs with the speech of Lacan, it is implied and produces resounding writings then. It is the time of conceptual research around the language, the subject and of meaning. One finds then at his sides, the linguist and philosopher, Jean-Claude Milner.
Discusses on the diffusion of the writings lacaniens
With died of Lacan, it starts has to practice the psychoanalysis, and then holds its writings with the circle of the psychoanalysts lacaniens. With Letters with the enlightened opinion in 2001 and the Nephew of Lacan , it signs a return virtuoso on the French intellectual scene. He initiates then a vast resistance movement intellectual by creating the " Forum of the psychiatrists " in 2003 so that the attacks repeated against the psychoanalysis do not remain unanswered. One hears there BHL, Catherine Clément, Philippe Sollers and well of others, for one supports decisive against scientistic totalitarianism. At the beginning of 2006, it directed the edition of the Anti- the black Book of the psychoanalysis , a compilation of texts for the majority resulting from the “Forum Anti TCC” which was held with the Meridian line Montparnasse in April 2005.Jacques-Alain Miller is within an important controversy on the publication of the seminars of Lacan. This last indicated it to publish the integrality of its oral teaching. Miller discharged this spot only very slowly. The seminars published also made the object of criticism on behalf of psychoanalysts like Charles Melman, which shows Miller to deform the word of Lacan. For some, it is extremely probable which the not-publication of the seminars is a means of sitting its capacity on the psychoanalytical community: that which holds the word of Lacan is legitimate one to the only speak about it. Some showed it to want to keep the seizure on the intellectual heritage of Lacan while directing in a despotic way the School of the freudienne cause, which caused in reaction the creation of many other schools lacaniennes, thus contributing to the bursting of the community lacanienne in France. The competition with Melman, its psychoanalyst, is not foreign there.
March 30th, 2007, the Court of Bankruptcy of Paris gave the judgment following on the cogency of the action of publication of the seminar by Jacques-Alain Miller, here:
“Waited until he is discussed only Lacan, which was opposed to any publication of its teaching, accepted the transcription of this one only in the condition that it is carried out by Mr. Miller; Waited until the right of disclosure postmortem must be exerted with the service of work, in agreement with the will of the author as revealed and expressed of alive sound; Waited until the fact that Lacan accepted the publication of its teaching in a written form (…) does not allow at all in inférer that the author forced Mr. Miller to reveal his work in his entirety and a fortiori within a fast or only given time; Waited until (…) the only Miller obligation is to protect the work of which it with the load against very reached (…) Waited until the character obviously badly founded of the engaged activity reveals an intention to harm constitutive of a fault (…). “
“The court says that Jacques-Alain Miller did not make any notorious abuse in nonthe exercise of his right of disclosure of the written work of Jacques Lacan”
