Jacopo del Sellaio

Jacopo del Sellaio or Jacopo di Arcangelo , (Florence, 1442 - 1493) is a painter of the school florentine.

It is called del Sellaio (the Saddler) by the trade of his Arcangelo father. He is the father of the painter Arcangelo Jacopo del Sellaio.

Biography

As recalled by Giorgio Vasari, he is pupil of Filippo Lippi, and, after his beginnings, takes as a starting point the work of the Verrocchio, in the Compianto sul Cristo morto (Rotterdam), and in his Annunciazione of 1472 ( Santa Maria delle Grazie with San Giovanni Valdarno). He also shows to have been subject to the influences of Botticelli, already obvious in his Annunciazione of 1473 with Santa Lucia dei Magnoli of Florence.

One decade afterwards, he collaborates with Botticelli and Bartolomeo di Giovanni in the series of Nastagio degli Onesti (the first and the second episode with Madrid, Musée of Prado of Madrid, the fourth in Watney Collection of London). The work of Bartolomeo is recognized to have been subject to the influences of Ghirlandaio ( Pietà , 1483 with Berlin; Crocifissione and holy , (1490), San Frediano in Cestello , Florence) and very close to Botticelli, even in the smaller compositions like the series of the Madonna adoranti it Bambino (Johnson Collection of Philadelphia, with the Metropolitan Museum off Art of New York and with the Bandini museum with Fiesole).
