Pat Metheny known as of him which he is “the last jazzman of the XXe century has to have influenced the following generations”.
Biography
Youth and formation
John Francis, known as Jaco, Pastorius is born in 1951 in Pennsylvania. His/her father, musician professional (Beater and Singer) is of origin German E and his mother of Finnish origin. He is 7 years old when its family settles in Florida. It is there that Jaco passes its childhood and impregnates itself with all the musics which it can hear (music of the the Caribbean, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Rock…).It went to the elementary school with St Clement Catholic School, then with the college in Northeast High in Oakland Park. Endowed athlete, it practiced many sports, of which American football, the basketball, baseball. It seems that its arrogance was worth vexations to him rather early: at 13 years, it was taken in ambush by a football player irritated against him, which left him a broken wrist, and affected consequently its capacity to be played of the battery.
It is initiated with the Piano, the Guitare and even with the Saxophone. At 15 years, after a new operation with the arm, it adopts the low definitively. It uses low a fretless that it was arranged starting from a Fender Low Jazz 1962 by removing some the Frette S, by recovering the handle of several layers of an epoxy varnish and while adapting to it of the cords to “round nets”.
It begins in orchestra buildings, in particular “Olas Brass”, a group of coppers of nine musicians, who made resumptions of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, James Brown and the Tijuana Brass: the bass player David Neubauer having left, it took the place and began his irresistible rise of legendary bass player. He plays, a time, on boats of cruising (he will cross the musicians of the Wailers and will discover the Reggae in Jamaica). He makes a very long round with the D.C. Riders (alias Cochran' S Circuit Riders), the group of the singer Wayne Cochran. Pastorius will always regard this round as the happiest period of its life.
Nickname
Born " John Francis Pastorius III" , its name of confirmation Anthony produced " John Francis Anthony Pastorius III". The choice of the name " Jaco" seem to be influenced by its admiration for the player of baseball Jocko Conlon. A misspelling in a letter addressed by the French pianist Alex Darqui would have directed his choice towards " Jaco".
Influences
The most important influences are, according to him: James Brown, the Beatles, Miles Davis, and Igor Stravinski, which represents the four principal sources of influence for him - funk, rock'n'roll, jazz and traditional.
Other influences quoted by him: Jimi Hendrix, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Paul Hindemith, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, The Band, Santana, Frank Zappa, Bob Marley, Rocco Prestia, Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Otis Redding, Cannonball Adderley, Jerry Jemmott, James Jamerson and Lucas Cottle (an unknown bass player New Zealand which often played with him).
Success
With Will go Sullivan, Paul Bley and Pat Metheny
At the beginning of the Years 1970, installed with Miami, Pastorius plays in the orchestra of the multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan and gives courses to the University. There, it meets the young person Pat Metheny who introduces to him the pianist Paul Bley. In 1974, the group of Bley, composed of Metheny, Pastorius and beater Bruce Ditmas, records an album (which, “business obliges”, will be republished later on under the title “ Jaco ”, the bass player having become a “high-speed motorboat meanwhile”). In 1975, Pastorius plays sides of the beater Bob Moses on the first disc of Stalemate Metheny Bright size life which is in fact in the beginning the demonstration of Metheny to seek concerts… ECM will distribute this disc like an album produced by the house.
In solo
In 1975, it records for the label Epic its first album as leader, heading Jaco Pastorius . It is this album which brings the celebrity to him. It is true that this disc is plentiful and gives a good outline of virtuosity and broad musical spectrum of Pastorius (jazz, rhythm and blues, rock'n'roll, music of the Caribbean). One can hear there a époustouflante taken again in duet with the Percussionniste Don Alias of the standard Bebop “ Donna Lee ” Charlie Parker, a sublime piece in solo “ Portrait off Tracy ” (where Pastorius uses - largely beyond what was then heard - the technique of the melody play and in agreements in Harmonique S and shows that the low one can be approached like a polyphonic instrument), a drunk topic “ Like one, over ” with the singers Sam and Dave, of the titles Jazz fusion or Latin jazz with Herbie Hancock and Hubert Laws, etc This album leaves in 1976, year of exit of the album Black Market of Weather Report in which he plays two pieces.
The same year, it records, for the first time with the singer Joni Mitchell, the album “ Hejira ”.
Weather Carryforward: the period of glory
It is thus in 1976 that it joined Weather Report, the group of Jazz rock'n'roll founded by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter in which Pastorius will remain until in 1982. With the arrival of Pastorius, and thanks to the charisma of this last, Weather Report is a planetary success largely exceeding the small circle of the amateurs of jazz. Zawinul and Shorter are not mistaken there and Pastorius is Co-producer as of the second album. One can hear Pastorius on the albums Black Market (1976), Heavy Weather - which contains “ Birdland ” and “ Teen Town ” - (1977), Mr. Gone (1978), 8:30 (1979), Night Passage (1980) and Weather Report (1982). Joe Zawinul called Jaco " the catalyst" because of its capacity to catalyze the attention of the public.
To quantify the importance of Jaco in the universe of the Jazz Rock'n'roll, let us quote for example the simple sentence published later a few years at the time of a historical review by the magazine " Le Monde of the musique" , " at the end of 82, Pastorius and Erskine leave Weather Report, dead Rock" Jazz; …
Between 1977 and 1979, Pastorius is in addition very active. It records like guide of the singer Joni Mitchell with the guitarist Pat Metheny and the percussionnist Don Alias “ Don Juan' S Reckless Daughter ” (1977), “ Shadows and lights ” and “ Mingus ” (1979). One can also hear it at the sides of the Tromboniste Albert Mangelsdorff, of Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Herbie Hancock, Michel Colombier, and even on the piece “a simple melody” of Michel Polnareff.
It is at that time that Jaco Pastorius starts to have increasingly strange behaviors. He indeed suffers from bipolar Troubles (depressive Psychose maniaco) where phases of euphoria and phases of depression alternate. In addition, it consumes much drug and alcohol. This leads to catastrophic services (the concert with Havana with John McLaughlin and Tony Williams, in 1979, remained one of the worst memories of the British guitarist), of the cancelled dates, the disputes with musicians and leaders of recording companies,…
Word off mouth
In 1981, Jaco records for the label Warner Music Group with a Big band assembled for the occasion, Word off mouth, an album éponyme. One finds in this orchestra of the musicians like Don Alias, Peter Erskine, Herbie Hancock, Othello Molineaux, Michael Brecker, Howard Johnson, Hubert Laws, Wayne Shorter, Toots Thielemans,… They are appreciably same the musicians who play on the album Birthday concert recorded in public for the 30 years of the bass player. The play of Pastorius is at the time with its apogee.
In 1982, it records a last album, éponyme, with Weather Report. Pastorius makes off a round with Word Mouth gone up for the occasion. The orchestra occurs inter alia in Japan (where is recorded the double album live Twins , from which the album Invitation will be drawn). So in many concerts are marvellous - as the listening of the discs attests it -, this round is at the very least chaotic. Certain concerts are catastrophic and the anecdotes on the “moved” behavior of the bass player start to fill the heading scandals of the newspapers. Pastorius must dissolve the orchestra.
Jaco Pastorius records what will be published after its death like the album Holiday for sides . This album, rather strange, is primarily devoted to the use of the steel drums and proposes Othello Molineaux, specialist in the instrument. At the time, the producer of the recording company refuses to leave the album, of which the realization was however expensive, regarding the music recorded as too hermetic and thinking that such a product would not have any commercial future. Jaco will remain about it very frustrated. The album will thus leave in the years 1990, but the original soundtracks, whom had been left a little with the abandonment, found themselves in the hands of clones of Jaco, copying its sound and its style .
Decline
Madness
Pastorius is thus found without recording company and orchestra. Its psychiatric problems are increasingly harmful with its career. It connects the accidents (as the fall of a balcony in Italy) and the scandals (appearances on scene naked, covered of mud, drunk dead…). The anecdotes on its “eccentricities” abound, sometimes amusing (convened in urgency for a repetition in the middle of the night, Brian Melvin finds the bass player playing with a plastic duck in its bath), but generally tragic (at the time of a round in Germany with Biréli Lagrène, it jumps of the bus and is found the following day by the local police sleeping in snow vêtu of only one tee-shirt). It follows a time a treatment to the Lithium which makes it apathetic. As soon as it ceases this treatment, it becomes again unverifiable.
Last participations
Starting from 1984, its behavior closes to him the doors of a good part of the music scene. One can however hear it near Mike Stern, Hiram Bullock, Brian Melvin, Biréli Lagrène, etc Its concerts and its discs of the time unfortunately often resemble “Jam abstract and noisy sessions”. They are not often, even if one finds there sometimes good surprise, that a pale reflection of its genius. It however takes part in 1985 in the realization of excellent a teaching video Modern Electric Bass .
Without fixed residence
In 1986, it became Without fixed residence, sleeping with open air and passing the majority of its time to trail with tramps on a ground of tennis shoe. In July, it is interned with the psychiatric hospital Bellevue (New York). In December, it turns over to Florida, lives a time in his father before taking again a life of semi-tramp. It regularly is stopped by the police force, and “is prohibited stay” in many clubs of jazz. In the same way, it is frequently ejected manu militari in concerts of other musicians during whom it tries to go up on scene without being invited there (concert of Carlos Santana with Fort Lauderdale, for example).
Died
One evening of September 1987, it is violently beaten by a bouncer of nightclub, after being itself beaten with the director of the box, Luke Havan, in front of the Midnight Bottom Club with Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale. One finds a lying, having lost eye and suffering Pastorius of a cranial traumatism as well as pneumonia. It is led to the hospital where it dies 10 days later while almost not having begun again knowledge. The legend says that its heart stopped 3 hours after his respiratory assistance had been disconnected, whereas its electroencephalogram was flat.
Style
The major influence of low electric modern
Jaco Pastorius is a key musician in the history of the low Guitare. Following the example Jimi Hendrix for the guitar or of Charlie Parker for the saxophone, Pastorius revolutionized the approach of its instrument. By its virtuosity, its inventiveness, its direction of Groove, its exploration of all the resources of the instrument (rhythmic, melody, harmonic, etc, but also of specificities of the “amplified” instruments: Larsen, use of pedals of effects, it inspired by the thousands of bass players. There is “its Pastorius” that one retouve still today in many musicians.
More largely, Jaco Pastorius brought to the jazz a wind of madness (it is not innocent that one of its compositions is titrated “ Punk jazz ”) hitherto foreign to this style of music. It makes a splendid service on " black market" at the time of a concert in Stadthalle with Offenbach (Germany).
Pastorius was also a remarkable type-setter. One owes him of the titles which became standard of jazz: “ Continuum ”, “ Portrait off Tracy ”, “ Three views off has secret ”, “ Teen town ”, “ Liberty city ”, “ Reza ”, “ Used to Be has cha cha ”, “ River people ”, “ Opus pocus ”, etc
Instruments and technique
Pastorius was especially known for its use of two low Fender jazz of the beginning of the year 1960. There was a model with hoops of it, the other without: the model fretless had been worked out by its care, thanks to its artisanal skill. In particular, low the fretless that it had built allowed him faster plays.
It was one of the first bass players to use controls of equalizer to go up the power of the average frequencies, thus accentuating returned already very the " rond" of its Fender fretless. It used also the effect Delay MXR (which one can hear on his solo with Weather Report, " Slang" , where it puts in loop small a Rif before playing a solo over). This effect enabled him to also create a very particular sound, doubling the notes when it regulated the delay at least. It used later a Chorus pedal and Octaver (in particular in the sessions with Biréli Lagrène, in 1986). It was also a Master without precedent of the use of the Harmonique S natural and artificial (particularly in Portrait off Tracy ), which enabled him to obtain sound effects close to a chime. The harmonics on low fretless were regarded before as almost impossible.
Its two low of 1962 was flights shortly after its entry at the hospital of Bellevue, in 1986; they were never found. It had also two low Jaydee conceived for him little before its death. At the end of the years 1990, a person claimed to have them while trying to sell them on Ebay, but the sale was cancelled because of the protests of the fans.
Peter Erskine, old beater of Weather Carryforward and highly skilled Sideman with Don Alias (percussionnist) of Jaco pays on the comments of the album " 30th anniversary" that he worked his scenic play enormously (cf his piece " Slang" , where he played his last agreement while jumping to feet togethers on his low in particular by powdering the scene with talc to enable him to swivel more quickly on his feet (what irritated passably Joe Zawinul with long). This episode shows that Jaco, nonglad to look after its virtuosity and to compose/arrange perfectly, was due to a single scenic play to characterize its musical genius, following the example Jimi Hendrix.
