Jacana with peak

The jacana with peak ( Irediparra gallinacea ) is the only species of the kind Irediparra. Like the other species of Jacana S, it is able to go on the floating plants of extended from tropical fresh water.

Description

The male measures 20 to 21 cm length for a weight of 85 G while the female measurement 24 to 27 cm for a weight of 140 G. The scale is from 39 to 46 cm. The top of the head (surmounted of a red peak) and the back of the neck are black. The face and the throat are white. It has broad band black in bottom of the chest and the belly is white. The lower part of the wings is black. The back and the top of the wings are maroon. The tail is black. It has very long legs with very large fingers.

Distribution and habitat

One finds it in the south-east of Borneo, in the south of the Filipino , the Sulawesi, the Moluques, in the Eastern Small islands of the Probe, in New Guinea, New Britain, in north and is Australia.

He lives the fresh water extents with a watery vegetation (Nénuphar or Jacinthe of water) sufficient to form a floor.

Food

He nourishes seeds and insects found at water surface.

Reproduction

The female is polyandrous. It lays four eggs in a nest at water surface which are brooded only by the male.
