JBL

JBL is a mark of material hi-fi created in 1946 by James Bullough Lansing.

The company is created after James Lansing leaves Altec Lansing where it occupied the post of vice-president. It is directed then towards the design and the manufacture of components for Haut-parleur S and of equipment for the cinemas and the general public. After the suicide of Lansing in 1949, its associate Bill Thomas develops the notoriety of the mark which becomes gradually a reference as regards domestic loudspeakers.

In 1969, JBL is sold at the Jervis company, which will become later Harman International. The mark is maintained and is characterized by its products which are in particular used in the studios of recording, the concert halls and the festivals in the open air. They were also used to develop the audio standard THX.

The company is organized today in two independent divisions, JBL Consumer for the general public and JBL Professional for the professional market.
