The March 16th 1978, the Amoco Cadiz , an Oil ( supertanker ) built in 1974 registered with the Liberia (Tonnage: 234.000 barrels), of 330 m length, chartered by the American company Amoco Transport, subsidiary of the Standard Oil, failed off the Breton coasts , opposite the Village of Portsall.
220 000 tons of Pétrole gross Iran IEN transported, to which will come to be added 3 000 tons of Fuel, were poured on 400 km of Breton coasts (France). Hundreds of volunteers mobilized by associations of ecologists came to collect the tar with the hand and the shovel. The authorities say to have put six months to make pump or disperse oil and clean the Breton coasts. But actually the large cleaners were the waves and of the natural bacteria.
After the catastrophe, in France, several ecologist organizations launched a call to the Boycott of the products of the company Shell (for which this oil was intended) more especially as this one had not been implied in collective cleaning. Pretexting that the Shell France (distribution) was a company different from the international Shell , this company made a lawsuit for commercial obstruction with some of these associations (of which Friends of the Earth of Brice Lalonde). It gained this lawsuit and an enormous amount for the theoretical financial loss, but had the " délicatesse" not to really dare to recover this money, which would have involved the dissolution of all associations ecologists concerned, useless and anti thing strategic.
