Izod Center

The Izod Center (named before Brendan Byrne Arena and Continental Airlines Arena then sometimes referred like Meadowlands Arena or The C.A.A. ) is a general sports room located in the Meadowlands Sports Complex close to the Giants Stadium, with East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Since 1981 the arena is the residence of the Nets of the New Jersey, a frankness from Basket-ball evolving/moving in National Basketball Association. Of 1982 with 2007, it was the skating rink of the Devils of the New Jersey, a team of Hockey of the National league of hockey which moved in 2007 in new the Prudential Center of Newark. Between 1985 and 2007, the university team of Basketball of Seton Hall University, the Seton Hall Pirates (NCAA), played its home matches in this room before moving with the Devils in the Prudential Center. The other tenants of the Izod Center were two teams of Lacrosse of NLL, which are the New Jersey Saints and the New Jersey Storm as well as the New Jersey Rockets of MISL, the New Jersey Red Dogs and the New Jersey Gladiators of the Arena Football League then the New Jersey XTreme of the National Indoor Football League. The Izod Center has a capacity of: 19,968 places for the Basketball NBA: 19,500 for the Basketball NCAA, and approximately: 20,000 for the concerts then it has 29 continuations of luxury and 1.060 seats of club. There are approximately 4.000 bays parking in the sector of the arena and 18.000 places additional with the carparks of the Giants Stadium and Meadowlands Racetrack.

History

The Izod Center was built in 1977 and was inaugurated the July 2nd 1981 along the New Jersey Route 120 close to the Giants Stadium and the Meadowlands Racetrack in the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Its original name is Brendan Byrne Arena (the name of the former governor of the New Jersey, Brendan Thomas Byrne) and the first event was the inauguratif concert of Bruce Springsteen.

The October 30th 1981, the Nets of the New Jersey, which played Louis Brown Athletic Center of the Université Rutgers, made their first home match in this room vis-a-vis the Knicks of New York, the score was from 103 to 99 for Knicks. The January 31st 1982, the enclosure had organized NBA All-Star Range 1982.

In 1982, the Rockies of Colorado of the National league of hockey became the Devils of the New Jersey and they played their first match of regular season in this skating rink the October 5th vis-a-vis the Penguins de Pittsburgh with a tie (3-3).

The cost of construction of the building was approximately $85 million dollars and its originators were Grad Partnership and Dilullo, Clauss, Ostroki & Partners. In 1996, Continental Airlines bought the rights of name of the room for $29 million dollars over 12 years. Formerly called Brendan Byrne Arena and Continental Airlines Arena , it accueilla the tournament NCAA of Basketball in 1984, three editions of WWE SummerSlam in 1989, 1997 and 2007, the King off the Boxing ring of 2001 and WWE No Mercy of 2004. On average, there is approximately 200 events and 2 million visitors per annum in the room, and approximately 54 million visitors attended more than 5.000 events since its opening in 1981.

The Izod Center is a popular site for the concerts thanks to its acoustics. Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews Band occurred several times in this building.

Future

In October 2007, the Devils of the New Jersey moved with the Prudential Center and in a few years the Nets of the New Jersey will leave to Brooklyn in the Barclays Center.

Rights of name

The January 4th 1996, New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority announced the negotiations with the airline company Continental Airlines which has a hub with the International airport Newark Liberty. The company bought the rights of name of the room over 12 years for $29 million dollars.

Following the last season of the Devils in the arena in 2007, Continental Airlines chose to stop the agreement. The new name is from now on Izod Center , which took effect as from the October 31st 2007. The Izod company will pay per annum $1,4 million dollars for the first two years of the agreement, while the Nets are still tenants, who will drop to 750,000 $ per annum for the balance of the quinquennial business.
