Iznogoud

Iznogoud is a series of Cartoon of Rene Goscinny and Jean Tabary. This series was created in 1961 for the magazine Record of which it constituted the principal floret, under the title: adventures of the caliph Haroun El Poussah   ; after the disappearance of this magazine, it continued in the newspaper Pilote in 1968.

Synopsis

At the time of the Thousand and One Nights, Haroun el-Poussah is the Caliph liked Baghdad, and Iznogoud its devoted Vizier. Iznogoud is assisted of Dilat Larath, its odd-job man. Iznogoud has an obsession: “to become caliph in the place of the caliph! ”. If the caliph is débonnaire, Iznogoud is a concentrate of cruelty and selfishness. Each one of its attempts to relieve the Caliph is balanced irremediably by a catastrophe dispatching it in an inextricable situation, which does not prevent from finding it in its functions as so of nothing was not with the following episode. Contrast between these two characters as well as the bad luck of the vizier in the execution of his plots machiavelic and twisted are the principal comic springs of the series. Moreover, one finds in Iznogoud the “leg” of Goscinny, mixes cultural and historical references shifted (in particular mayors of the palate and the lazy kings) and word games on the names of the characters.

The expression “to become caliph in the place of the caliph! ” passed today in the current language.

Main characters

  • the Top dog Iznogoud : the hero/anti-hero of the series and the top dog of Baghdad. Iznogoud, as its name indicates it, has almost all the existing defects: cruel, miserly, egoistic, coleric and especially very aggressive. Obsessed by the idea to become caliph in the place of the Caliph, it tries to forward it by all the moyenssans never there. Of small size, it makes the terror of almost any Baghdad, which hates it.
  • Dilat Larath : the faithful henchman of Iznogoud. Dilat is a large man (less than the Caliph), animal, slackness and ignoramus, even if it has sometimes surprising moments of intelligence. It is not used almost for nothing in Iznogoud, which it martyrise and treats it d'" improductif" , of " nullity totale" , etc One does not know if he loves or hates his owner, the albums being contradicted on this subject, but it is certain that it is faithful for him. It is often victim him even plans of Iznogoud for the Caliph, or helps on the contrary his owner to be left some of these situations. He always guesses that the plans will fail, and thus acts mollement, knowing that it is missed in advance…
  • the Caliph Haroun El Poussah : caliph de Bagdad. Good, soft, lazy and débonnaire, the Caliph is adored of his people. Unfortunately, it is completely stupid, as the fact proves it that it is in any Baghdad not to only know that Iznogoud is a true monster which dreams to take its place. It relies on the contrary any on its top dog, whom it calls " My good Iznogoud" , and that he adores. It is however equipped with an extraordinary chance, which enables him to escape all the plans from Iznogoud for the détrôner.

Genesis

Rene Goscinny thus tells the genesis of the character of Iznogoud:

“the series Iznogoud was born in a special way: it is curiously resulting from the Petit Nicolas which I made with Sempé. I had written a history where Nicolas was on vacation in a colony, with a monitor which told stories with the children. And he had told them the history of a malicious top dog who wanted to always become caliph in the place of the caliph. It was all. And, when one asked to us a series with Tabary and me for the review Record , I thought of making a parody of the Thousand and One Nights , by always taking the topic of the vizier who wants to become caliph and who does not arrive there. And then I decided that there I would give up myself with my nice sin to find the most atrocious Calembour S. ”

The first appearance of Iznogoud takes place the January 25th 1962 in number 1 of Record , a weekly magazine created by Dargaud and the Good press. Iznogoud is published thereafter simultaneously in Record and Pilote . The first album is published by Dargaud in 1966; the series will be then published with the editions BD' Star at the time of the death of Rene Goscinny. BD' STAR had been founded by Jean Tabary and Francis Slomka, journalist with Antenne2. BD' Star becomes the Editions of Seguinière in 1979 then the Tabary Editions in 1981. Francis Slomka, with which one owes the scenario homage to Rene Goscinny on last page of I want to be a caliph in the place of the caliph , as well as the synopses of the Childhood of Iznogoud and Iznogoud and the women , will yield its shares of the publisher to Murielle Tabary. It gives up the edition in 1981 to be devoted to its studies of medicine. He is today the owner of famous “the Private clinic of the knee” in Paris!

After the death of Goscinny, Tabary will only continue to make live the character.
