Izeste

Izeste or Iseste is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Its inhabitants is called Isestois. Izeste means " who is in the eau".

Commune located in Valley of Ossau.

The commune is crossed by the Gave d' Oloron and its affluent, the brook Lamisou.

Toponymy

The toponym Izeste appears in the forms Yseste (1270, titles of Ossau), Issesta (1614, reformation of Béarn), Sent Estienne d' Izesta (1621, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).
The examination of the whole of the files filed in Town hall of Iseste, reveals that the S was transferred in Z in consequence of a calligraphic error made in the word Iseste (of is = water and este = calm water).
The panel located at the entry of the commune on D920 always indicates Iseste .

History

Paul Raymond note which the commune counted a laic abbey, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
In 1385, Izeste counted 12 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Ossau.
