Ituri

The Ituri is a rich district (see Kilo-Motor bike) Eastern province, on a surface of 65.658 km ², in the North-East of the Democratic republic of Congo, on the Western slope of the Lac Albert. It has borders with the Uganda and the Sudan. It includes/understands five administrative Territories, which are: Aru (6.740 km ²), Djugu (8.184 km ²), Irumu (8.730 km ²), Mahagi (5.221 km ²) and Mambasa (36.783 km ²).

Ituri is an area of high plateau (2000-5000 meters) which has a large tropical forest but also landscape of savanna. The district has a rare fauna (Okapi…). As regards the flora one finds tree Mangongo there, with the sheets of which the Pygmies Mbuti build their house.

Ituri is in prey with an interethnic conflict since 1999 which made more than 50.000 died and 500.000 moved. Among the rebellious organizations, one can quote the Union of the Congolese patriots, the generals rebellious Nkundabatware and Mutebesi of the Congolese Rassemblement for the democracy (RCD) and the Armed forces of the Congolese people.

Ituri was the framework of the military operation of interposition of the European Union, carried out within the framework of PESD, baptized Artémis , from June to September 2003.
