Itri

Itri is a common of the Province of Latina in the area Latium in Italy.

Geography

Located at 170 Mr. with the top of the sea level, the city populated of almost 9.000 inhabitants extends on a surface from 101,15 km. squares. It is a small town of the south of the province of Latina which is practically divided into two by the R.N. 7 Appia, to 134 km. from Rome and 91 of Naples.

History

Its origin goes back to prehistory. It then formed part of the field of Aurunci-Ausoni, and passed thereafter under Roman domination. Although not constituting yet at the time a true populated center, it was however to be a relay, if one considers his position between Fondi and Formia by the collar of Donato Saint, surely painful to cross for the horses and the travellers who passed there to reach Itri and midday of the peninsula. The origins of its name are dubious. The historians and the specialists in the local history propose several assumptions. There are those which think that the name derives from " ITER" (the way). In support of this thesis, it there with the presence of an inscription on a stone which is on the left Mamurra Door. Others, on the contrary, support a more picturesque thesis. Because one finds, on the aforementioned Door Mamurra, a " hydre rampante" , the true founders of Itri would be according to the latter, the inhabitants of Amiclae, who were flee of their ground because of the invasion of snakes and which found shelter on the hills. In favor of this thesis, on the armorial bearings of the municipal gonfalon one finds a snake. Placed in the middle of a valley surrounded by the Aurunci mounts which protect it from the cold winds of the Apennines and the Abruzzi, Itri enjoys a soft in winter, expenses and healthy climate in summer. The old center is on a hillock. One can reach it feet or in the car. Strewn with old lanes, steps and arcades which follow one another between the houses, he known in the last years a remarkable tourist development. The old houses saved by the destruction of the second world war, saved degradation and renovated made a new breath vital to the City, traversed more and more by visitors with discovered picturesque monuments and recesses.
