Ithaque

Ithaque (in Greek old Ἰθάκη Ithákē , in Greek modern Ιθάκη Itháki ) is an island of the Ionian Mer, in the west of the continental Greece and in the North-East of Céphalonie. It belongs to the Archipel islands Ioniennes and counts nearly 5000 inhabitants for a surface of 103 km ². Its capital is Vathy. Its currency is the Euro.

Mythology

According to the Odyssey of Homère, Ulysses was king d' Ithaque, island which it found after having wandered in Mediterranean. It is in Ithaque that his wife Pénélope awaited it in spite of applicants undertaking like Antinoüs.

History

The oldest settlement of the island goes back to III Close to the village of Pelikaté, a Nécropole of the average Helladique and Mycénien was discovered, as well as cyclopean walls. In other archeological sites, pottery mycénienne and objects of the Géométrique (votive tripods) were discovered.

Most of the buildings of the island was destroyed by a Earthquake in 1953.
