Young professional, Italo ZILIOLI made vibrate all Italy cyclist between at the end of August and the beginning of October 1963, afterwards, single performance, four very convincing successes in semi-traditional Italian (circuit of the three valleys varésines, turns of the Apennines, of Venezia, of Emilie, these three last victories clearly detached). By its manner of running, to attack, he indeed recalled Fausto Coppi of which he was announced like a possible successor. Joined then outdistanced by other hopes (Gianni Motta in 1964, Felice Gimondi in 1965), the runner inhabitant of Turin, with moral rather friable, remained a long time a hope, while accumulating, during a long career, the victories in semi-traditional Italian and the places of honor in the turn of Italy (second in 1964 behind Anquetl, 1965 behind Adorni and 1966 behind Motta, 4th in 1968 after Merckx, Adorni and Gimondi, 3rd in 1969 after Gimondi and Michelotto, 5th in 1970 with the service of Eddy Merckx).
After having played the Co-leaders near several Italian champions (Balmamion at Sanson into 1965/66, Gimondi at Salvarani in 1967, Bitossi at Filotex into 1968/69), ZILIOLI became team-member of Eddy Merckx at Faemino in 1970, initiative which enabled him to start again its career by gaining the Catalan week, a stage of the turn of Italy and especially the 2nd stage in Angers of the turn of France, thus dispossessing E. Merckx of the yellow jersey. ZILIOLI preserved its yellow jersey during four days, the loser at the time of the stage of Valencians, without its fellow-members of Faemino, Belgians to the service of E. Merckx, being concerned with him… Passed at Ferretti in 1971, ZILIOLI continued on its impetus by gaining another stage race, Tirreno-Adriatico, and by helping its fellow-member Gosta PETTERSON to gain the turn of Italy. Returned in 1972 at Salvarani as lieutenant de Felice GIMONDI, ZILIOLI finished its career, of 1973 to 1976, in Italian teams of national size.
ZILIOLI gained also in particular the coppa Agostoni in 1964 and the championship of Zurich in 1966, and also five stages of the Turn of Italy, in 1965,1968,1969,1970 and 1972. It took part 14 consecutive times in the turn of Italy, finishing with 11 recoveries and 6 times in the five first (18th in 1963, 2nd in 1964,65 and 66, abandonment in 1967, 4th in 1968, 3rd in 1969, 5th in 1970,22e in 1971, eliminated in 1972, 14th in 1973, abandonment in 1974,39e in 1975 and 16th in 1976).
Italo ZILIOLI took part in three recoveries with the turn of France, in 1968,1970 and 1972. Promoted leader of the team of Italy in 1968, it finished 2nd 1st stage in the Esch-on-Alzette, beaten with the sprint by Charlie Grosskost. Reached fever of Malta, it renonça to take the departure of the 12th stage in Pau. Lieutenant de Merckx in the Faemino team in 1970, it gained the 2nd stage in Angers and carried the yellow jersey during 4 days. Outdistanced in the stage of the mount-Ventoux, it finished in 13th place. Returned in 1972 as lieutenant de Felice Gimondi, it finished 6th 4th stage with Royan, then, thereafter, patient, it did not take the departure of the 13th stage.
