Italian highway A4
The highway A4 (known as also Sérénissime ) crosses western in is whole the flat Po, on the basis of Turin, passing by Milan and being completed with Trieste.
It has many correspondences with the other large highways.
Between Turin and Venice, it has three ways plus the way of safety (except some passages on rivers like the viaduct on the Adda located in the section between Trezzo sull' Adda and Capriate San Gervasio, often announced in information on circulation for the decelerations).
The section between Venice and Trieste has yet today only two ways in each direction.
In 2005 began work for the fourth way between Milan and Bergamo, while work is completed on the section between Turin and Milan, connected with the building sites of the Train at high speed.
For a long time this way is regarded as a neuralgic point of the European communication, because it allows the bond between the Iberian peninsula and the Balkans.
Its course of approximately 530 km is managed by several companies: ASTM autostrada Torino Milano spa , Highway per Italia , Autostrada Brescia, Verona, Vicenza, Padova , Società delle Highway di Venezia E Padova and Autovie venete .
Various sections
Turin-Milan
The Turin-Milan highway is one of oldest of Italy. Work lasted nearly three years, and the inauguration took place the October 25th 1932. It is managed today by the company ASTM autostrada Torino Milano spaThe course is spread on 127 km (approximately 100 km in Piedmontese territory , the remainder in Lombardy), it is completely in plain and almost very rectilinear.
On this section the intersections are with:
- the A5 (Turin Aoste - Mont Blanc) near Santhià,
- the A26 (Voltri - Gravellona Toce) near Biandrate
- and the peripheral west of Milan (A50) near the toll of Milan Ghisolfa .
Quasi the 4 km of highway between the exchanger towards tangential the west of Milan and the exchanger of Milano Certosa drain each day an important traffic. The decelerations on the western way are caused by the difficulty of the large vehicles of fitting in the peripheral, while those of the way east must with the enormous traffic around the " nodo di fiorenza" where comes to also join circulation coming from the highway from lakes (A8-A9) and the town of Milan. One can notice that this last segment is not equipped with way of safety, which makes difficult the intervention of the backup facilities.
Milan-Brescia
After the exchanger of Milan-Certosa the section is managed by the company Autostrade per Italia SpA .Continuing in direction of Brescia A4 crosses the strongly industrialized zones of Cormano, Cinisello Balsamo and Sesto San Giovanni. Close to Monza, where is the toll of Milan-Is, it is connected with the peripheral north of Milan. To the height of the exit of Agrate Brianza A4 is connected with the peripheral is of Milan.
The section ranging between the toll of Milan-Ghisolfa and Milan-Is is called urban section of A4 , and the intermediate exchangers are of free access, without toll.
On nearly 90 km, the highway is held in territory lombard, according to a completely flat and rectilinear course except for a turn on the toll of Bergamo.
To Brescia it cuts the A21, it so resulting from Turin, but by a course southernmost than that of A4, through Alexandria, Plaisance and Crémone.
Brescia-Venice
Close to Brescia, one changes management company again, of Autostrade per Italia with Autostrada Brescia, Verona, Vicenza E Padova even if this change is visible only by the signals with the vertical on the way. This section of almost 170 km is spread partly in territory lombard and especially in the Venetian country , where the relief is felt as of the first kilometers until Desenzano del Garda.
Near Vérone one crosses the A22 (Brennero - Modena). In the following section, while arriving at Vicence, it is necessary to announce the only tunnels of all the course. After Vicence, the exchanger with the A31 opens the direction of Piovene Rocchette and Trento.
With Padoue the crossing with the A13 (Padoue- Bologna) is the occasion of a new change of company, invisible for the user, with the delle Società Autostrade di Venezia E Padova , person in charge until toll of Venice and also managing the Périphérique of Mestre.
Venice-Trieste
After a way of almost 15 km to cross the town of Mestre, with the right of Venice, on a viaduct, and which are the second critical point for the obstructions, A4 crosses the A27 (Mestre - Belluno) and the junction towards the Marco Polo airport of Venice. From there, A4 is reduced two-track in addition to the way of safety on nearly 120 km, managed by the company Autovie Venete which ensures the end of the course, to Trieste and Slovenia.
The section which starts with the last barrier of entry with Venice-crosses a few kilometers of Venetian territory for then entering in Friuli-Venezia Giulia the Province of Udine. Around Palmanova A4 gives rise to the A23 which carries out in Austria through the border to Tarvisio.
This highway, rebuilt after the terrible earthquake of the Friuli, is para-sysmique although comprising many viaducts with piles a height have common.
In the last piece, one meets the exits of Villesse (to leave Italy towards the Slovenia by Gorizia), of Ronchi dei Legionari (for the airport of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the memorial of died of the First World War of Redipuglia) and finally the final toll of Trieste-Lisert.
