Italian-American

One calls Italo-Américain an inhabitant of the the United States of origin Italy. This expression as well designates somebody born in the United States of Italian ascent, as an Italian immigrant in the United States. Although the Italian arrived early in the “new world”, the Italian Immigration of the United States really began in the Années 1880, and knew its apogee of 1900 with 1914. Approximately a third of these immigrants did not intend to remain only temporarily to earn money and to turn over to Italy. While one on four turned over indeed, the others decided to remain, or were obliged there because of the First World War. Only the German Irish, and later the Mexicains emigrated in such proportions.

In the American census of 2000, the Italian-American ones represent the larger sixth groups population according to its origin, with approximately 15,6 million inhabitants (5,6% of the American total population). The Sicilo-Americans are a large American subset whose ancestors are sicilian area of Italy.

History and Demography

The first Italian immigrants arrived rather early at the United States, by small groups. Number of them were in escape, after the failure of the revolutionary movements of 1848 and 1861. However, the majority of the process of immigration coming from Italy was held between the years 1880 and 1960. Many Italian-American were originating in the south of Italy and Sicily, the country poor and little educated, mainly thorough at the beginning by the econonmic misery of their area. Between 1880 and 1900: 655888 arrived at the United States. Two thirds of them were men. In the United States, Italian dominated of the specific districts (often called " little Italy" , small French Italy). The immigrants arrived with very little money and only asked to work. These districts were typically filled with over-populated slums equipped with little hygiene. Tuberculosis making its way. In the period of the years 1890-1920, the Italos-Americans furents often stereotyped as being violent ones and contôlés by the Maffia. In the years 1920, much of American used the example of Sacco and Vanzetti, in which these two Italian anarchists were condemned to died without tangible proofs. During the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the Italos-Americans were one of the communities most badly liked and maltreated. In 1891,11 Italian immigrants were lynched with the Orleans News because of their ethnic origin and suspicions weighing on the shoulders of the Italians in their implication in the Maffia. That was greatest lynching in the history of the United States.
