Itajaí
Itajaí is a city Brésil ienne of the State of Santa Catarina. It is located on the northern Littoral of the State, with the mouth of the Rio Itajaí-Açu, from which it draws its name. It is located at a Latitude of 26° 54 ' 28" south and with a Longitude of 48° 39 ' 43" west. Its population is estimated at 168.088 inhabitants in 2006. The municipality extends on 289 km ².
General information
Itajaí shelters the main port of fishing country and second university of Santa Catarina. First port of the State and second of the country, it is a large port of shipment which runs out the near total of the production of Santa Catarina.The trunk road BR-101 constitutes the principal access to the city. The roads BR-470 and SC-470 connect Itajaí to the remainder of the State.
History
Officially founded in 1860, the colonization of Itajaí however began in 1658, when João Dias D' Arzão arrives in the area coming from the State de São Paulo. In 1750, colonists Portuguese, come from Madeira and the Azores are installed on the current territory of the city. At the end of the XIXe century, it accommodates a large wave of German immigration .
Geography
Itajaí is located in low the Vallée of Rio Itajaí, on the Atlantic littoral . It is on the estuary of the Itajaí-Açu, which made possible the installation of a port important.The municipality overall plane, is located at the sea level. The major part of the original vegetable cover disappeared under the pressure from the urban development and the commercial development.
Culture and tourism
The major part of the population is of German and from the Azores ascent. The mixture of the German and Portuguese cultures is a distinctive mark of the city, beyond its beaches and other natural wealths.The Marejada, festival Portuguese, is the principal municipal festival, pointing out the cultural heritage of the Azores of the city.
Every year, Itajaí accommodates also one of the principal festivals of Brazilian popular music. The festival is held at September and brings together musicians and artists of all the country.

Itajaí is the seat of an important establishment of higher education of the northern Littoral of Santa Catarina, the Université of the valley of Itajaí.

The city comprises a club of Football evolving/moving into 1 division in the championship of Santa Catarina, the Clube Náutico Marcílio Dias.
