History
It was the first opera of Claudio Monteverdi for Venice. The opera was created with much success in Venice, where he was played ten times, he was then taken again in Theatro Castrovillani of Bologna, and in 1641 he was rejoué in Venice. In Bologna, and probably in Venice, the singers were Giulia Paolelli in Pénélope, Maddalena Manelli in Minerve, and Francesco Manelli as an Ulysses. The attribution of this work was seriously questioned, although attribution with Monteverdi still holds. The booklets differ significantly from the partition, although Monteverdi is known to be a very active editor of the texts on which he worked. The first modern resurrection was made by Vincent d' Indy in Paris in 1925. Many type-setters of 20th century published or " traduit" work to play it, among them Luigi Dallapiccola and Hans Werner Henze, and finally the opera entered the repertory in 1971 with representations to Vienna and Glyndebourne, and an edition by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, followed by a recording.
