Istres
Istres (in Occitan Of Provence: Istre according to the traditional standard and the Norme mistralienne) is a common French, located in the department of the Rhone delta and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Its inhabitants is called Istréens.
The commune is placed at the first rank of the flowered cities by the National council of the Cities and Flowered Villages of France.

Situation
Istres is located in the south of France in the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure and more precisely in the Rhone delta. Istres, bordered by the pond of Berre (largest of Europe) and the pond of Olivier, is located at approximately 60 km of Marseilles, 20 km of Living room-of-Provence, 10 km in the north of Martigues and 45 km of Arles. The city is also located near the plain of the Crau and the Regional natural park of the Camargue.
Climate
Istres profits from the Mediterranean Climat characterized by quasi an absence of freezing in winter and summers dry. It is thanks to this climate that one finds pine forests on the commune.

Heraldic
History
At the 10th century century, the old center of Istres takes form around a house seigneuriale. The city was built little by little around this encircled feudal core of ramparts. Istres owes its first industrial rise with the soda factories of Rassuen in 1808, and at the school of aviation established into 1917 which today became one of largest the air bases of France.

Personalities related to the commune

Felix Gouin (1884-1977), president of the Provisional government of the French Republic in 1946, Mayor of Istres of 1922 to 1941, and 1945 to 1959, appointed (SFIO) of the Rhone delta of 1924 to 1958 (it belonged to the 80 deputies which refused the full powerss with Pétain in 1940).
- Rene Leduc (1898, 1968), aeronautical engineer, originator and manufacturer of planes to ramjet, lived its last years and died in Istres.
- Nora Lafi (born in 1965), French historian d´origine Algerian, was born and grew in Istres, where she attended the college Arthur Rimbaud. Before devoting itself to its university career in Aix-en-Provence, Tunis, Turns then Berlin, it was in the years 1980 one of the personalities of first rank of the club local d athletism. It is aujourd´hui enquiring and teaching in Zentrum Moderner Orient of Berlin.

Organized since 1937 by the newspaper " Equipe" , more the sporting famous daily newspaper of our country, the challenge of the most sporting city is decreed by a national jury composed by technicians of the Sport, specialized journalists and mayors.

- Fencing: The club of fencing of Istres created in 1974 is strong of about fifty gunners and practical the foil and the sword.
