Isthmus of Tehuantepec

The isthmus of Tehuantepec is a Isthme located at the Mexico. It represents the short distance between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. Its name comes from the town of Tehuantepec (formally, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec ) in the State d' Oaxaca. The word Tehuantepec is derived from the word Nahuatl tecuani-tepec , meaning “hill of the jaguar”.

One regularly evokes the possibility of digging a transoceanic channel in this isthmus, competitor of the Panama Canal located at Panama.
