The most known isthmuses
Most known of the isthmuses is undoubtedly the isthmus of Panama, which connects the North America to the South America. This strip of land is long 2000 km and broad 300 km in north and 30 km in Panama.
Here of other known isthmuses:
- the first isthmus with being called as follows: the Isthmus of Corinth, in Greece;
- the isthmus of Dubrovnik - today Stradun, (main street), which connected Laus and Dubrava downtown only one;
- the Isthmus of Courlande, on the coasts of the Lithuania and the Russia;
- the Isthmus of Suez between the Africa and the Asia, in Egypt where the Suez Canal was dug;
- the Isthmus of Kra, which connects the Malaysian peninsula with Asia;
- the Isthme of Avalon to the Canada separates the principal island from Newfoundland of the peninsula of Avalon where the capital Saint John' S is;
- the isthmus of Tahiti;
- the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
Use of the isthmuses
The isthmuses are strategic places to build channels. The Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, reduced drastiquement maritime journey time between the east coast and the west coast of the America. The Suez Canal mentioned previously in is still an example since it makes it possible to connect the Europe and the Asia without circumventing the Africa.
Isthmus and strait
The isthmuses are the reverse of the straits. Indeed, whereas the isthmuses connect two wide ground between two stretch of water, the straits connect two stretch of water between two extended from ground.
