Issy-les-Moulineaux
History
Origin of the name of the city
In the beginning, Issy-les-Moulineaux was called simply Issy, this name perhaps coming from medieval Latin Issiacum or Isciacum , “field of Isicius”, a landowner Gallo-Roman.
It is into 1893 that Issy takes officially the name of Issy-les-Moulineaux . Moulineaux was the name of a small hamlet on the territory of the commune, called thus thanks to the mills which had been held there.
The princes de Conti
The house of Conti, connects junior by the Maison of Bourbon and resulting from the Maison from Cop, were composed of many properties, of which the castle of Issy, now destroyed and replaced by the French Musée of the Chart To play, where there still remains a tower. The castle had been bought the February 4th 1699 by François Louis of Bourbon-Conti for: 140000 pounds. Issy was then a marshy ground. It was a castle style Renaissance with large gardens arranged by Ours.
Princes de Conti lived there until 1777. It is for this period that Issy developed.
Aviation
The 20th century sees there being born European aviation on what was in the Années 1900 a military parade ground. This ground is delimited roughly speaking by the street Guynemer, the boulevard of the Voisin brothers and the boulevard Gallieni Issy-les-Moulineaux side, and the boulevard of the marshals side Paris (old fortifications). Current the Heliport of Paris - Issy-les-Moulineaux is the last vestige.
Inter alia memorable events, the first kilometer in closed circuit is carried out there on January 13rd, 1908 by Henri Farman on plane Voisin. Henri Farman discovers there how to take a turn with an airplane by inclining it and at the same time shows that these flying machines were manoeuvrable.
The Marquis Raul Pateras Pescara of Castelluccio (1890 - 1966) there tests his helicopters in the years 1922. The January 16th 1924, it makes a course of: 1160 meters which lasts ten minutes. The April 18th 1924, it obtains the world records of distance (Aérophile of the years 1921 to 1925).
An illustration of this performance decorated a long time the postal flame of the city. This prestigious last aeronautics, which had an major importance in the development of aviation, is the continuation from what occurred to the United States in 1903 when the Frères Wright, inventors of Flyer, made the first flight controlled of heavier than the air of the History.
In Issy-les-Moulineaux, modest and discrete monument is set up behind the town hall to the memory of this glorious last. One can read " there; Issy-les-Moulineaux, Cradle of the aviation". Other traces remain: a stage of Football is baptized Close Stade in homage to these brothers airframe manufacturers, a boulevard also bears their name there. One notes there also a public garden Louis Blériot, a street Georges Guynemer (he was not pioneer but the large ace of the war 14-18). A plane (Blériot {{XI}}?) also present in the weapons of the city, is surrounded by three mills.
