Issogne

Issogne is an alpine commune of the Val of Aoste in Italy of North.

Geography

History

The village was built around the castle. The castle of Issogne is on the ancient site of a Roman villa, but the documentary sources, go back to the 12th century.

In 1379 the châtellenie passes under control of Yblet de Challant which takes possession of construction and undertakes its extension. However it was necessary to await Georges de Challant so that the castle takes its current aspect.

Frescos, fountain, blazons and weapons painted on the walls, reinforce contrast between the austerity of the outside and the pictorial richness of the interior.

The castle was the permanent residence of the counts de Challant and lodged imperial hosts (Sigismond of Luxembourg) and royal (Charles VIII of France).

The splendor reached with Rene de Challant coincides with the beginning of a decline which finished at the 19th century thanks to the restorations of the painter inhabitant of Turin, Vittorio Avondo, then by its protection by the ministry for the Art schools and more recently by the maintenance allotted to the District council of the valley.

The Romance vault Solutor Saint, to the Feluran locality is of also historical and esthetic interest, with a furnace bridge out of carved wooden.
