Israeli presidential election of 2000
The Israeli presidential election of 2000 was held the July 31st 2000 so that the members of the Knesset indicate the 8th President of the State of Israel. It is the first time that the mandate of President is allotted for 7 years.
Candidates

Shimon Peres of the workers party is the favorite before the election. In the event of victory, it can become the first President to have occupied the function of before Prime Minister of Israel.

Moshe Katsav of the party Likoud occupied the function of Deputy Prime Minister in the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. Born in a Moslem country, Iran, Katsav can become the second President not Ashkénaze of the history of the country.
Result
Katsav creates the surprise to gather 63 votes around its candidature against 57 for Peres. The necessary majority to validate the election was of 61 votes out of the 120 possible ones in Knesset. Katsav becomes the first President come from the Likoud party when it lends oath the 2000.
