Israeli-Arab War of 1948
Most generally, the Israeli-Arab War of 1948 refers to the confrontations between Juifs and Arabs who occurred between 1947 and 1949 in the Middle East.
The historians use however maintaining name Guerre of Palestine of 1948 for this period and distinguish two phases there:
- a civil war during the last 6 months of the British Mandate of Palestine.
- a conventional war which corresponds to the events starting from the May 15th 1948 and which saw Israel, the Royaume hachémite of Transjordanie and several close Arab States to clash for the control of the country.
The protagonists or the commentators differently refer to these events according to their happy or unhappy exit. The Palestinians speak about Naqba ( catastrophe ) but while thinking mainly of the first period during which their forces were overcome by the Jewish forces and during which a good part of them lived a exodus. The Israelis speak them about Guerre of Independence but while thinking mainly of the second period which starts with the proclamation of independence of Israel and during which they faced several close Arab States.
This war was the subject of several in-depth studies as from the years 1980 following the opening of the Israeli files and is seen under other prospects since. In particular, the school known as of the Nouveaux Historians rewrote (or manufactured according to its detractors) the history of this war.
