Israel Kamakawiwo `ole

Israel Kamakawiwo `ole (May 20th 1959, June 26th 1997) known as Bruddah Iz or IZ , was the musician and the most known singer hawaiien in the years 1990. It had its international repute with its Medley, Over the Rainbow/What has Wonderful World in the album Facing Future (1993). This song was extremely diffused on the French waves at the end of the 20th century, and appears in the credits of end of many films and series.

Biography

Israel Kamakawiwo `ole is born in 1959 on the island from O `ahu at the hospital from Kuakini. His/her parents are Henry Kaleialoha Naniwa and Evangeline Leinani Kamakawiwo `ole. It grows in the community of Kaimuki in the suburbs of Waikīkī where his/her parents met and married. It starts to play of the music with his Skippy older brother at the 11 years age, inspired by the large artists hawaïens of the time such as Peter Moon, Palani Vaughn and Don Ho, which attends the establishment held by his/her parents.

Then its family moves with Makaha. There, it meets Louis " Moon" Kauakahi, Sam Gray and Jerome Koko. With his/her Skippy brother, they form the group Makaha Sons off Nor `ihau . As from 1976 and until in the Eighties, the group of contemporary music hawaïenne Makaha becomes famous by making rounds in Hawaii and the United States, and leaves 10 albums.

In 1982, his/her Skippy brother dies. The same year, he marries Marlène, his love of childhood, of which he has soon a fore-mentioned girl Ceslieanne " Wehi".

In 1990, Iz leaves its first album solo Ka `ano `I thanks to which it obtains the Price of the best contemporary album of the year and the Price of the best singer of the year, decreed by the Academy hawaïenne of Music (HARA, Hawaii `I Academy off Recording Arts). Facing Future leaves in 1993. Regarded by much as its best album, Facing Future contains its most famous song, the medley Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What has Wonderful World , as well as other titles such as Hawaii `I 78 , White Sandy Beach off Hawaii `I , Maui Hawaiian Sup' Pa Man and Kaulana Kawaihae . In 1994, Iz is declared Chanteur preferred of the year by the HARA. The album E Went E (1995) contains the song of the same name, politically committed. In 1996, In Say Life contains titles such as In this life and Starting All Over Again .

Throughout its career, it defends the rights hawaïens and the independence of Hawaii, in its songs (whose words referred to independence often directly) but also in its life of citizen.

In 1997, it is again rewarded by the HARA like Meilleur singer for the year, Meilleur artist of the year, Meilleur album of the year, and Better insular contemporary album of the year. It looks at the ceremony since a room of hospital.

In the last years of its life, Iz is obese and exceeds one moment 340 kg. He is hospitalized many times, and dies on June 26th, 1997, at 38 years, of a respiratory disease related to his obesity. The flag hawaïen is put in Bern. Its body is exposed to Capitole d' Honolulu, where more than 10.000 people come to pay homage to him the first day. Its ashes are then dispersed in the ocean with Makua Beach.

It was called " The Gentle Giant" (The nice giant) by its many admirors. It was also one of rare Hawaïens of pure stock. One described it like somebody of always merry and positive, liking his island and the people of Hawaii.

Facing Future (1993) was 25e with the Pop Classification of the , whose classifications refer. In this same magazine, Alone in IZ World (2001) was 1st with the Classification of the Music of the world, 135e to Signal 200, 13th with the Classification of the independent albums, and 15th with the Classification of the best sales of albums on Internet.
