Islettes

Islettes is a common French, located in the department of the Meuse and the area Lorraine.

Geography

It is a village located in the middle of the Argonne, and frontier with the department of the Marne. In the east of the Biesme, the village marks today the Western entry of the Meuse. It developed initially according to a traditional structure around a church, to continue its urbanization in linear form, along the road (today RN3 but formerly imperial way) which crosses it. Islettes also represent the Western border of the forest of Argonne.

History

The name of Islettes comes owing to the fact that these was 3 small islands which are connected today. It was, on several occasions, a border post between two territorial entities. Today the Marne and the Meuse, the Champagne-Ardennes and Lorraine, but yesterday, the Saint Worsen Germanic and the Kingdom of France, separated by the river from Biesme.

The name of Islettes was given to the famous earthenware manufactured at the XVIIIe century by the Bernard house. These earthenware are the object of collection. The valley of Biesme, where the village of Islettes is located, was a long time a production center industrial until the beginning of the XXe century: in addition to the faience manufacture, one counted glassmakings there.
