Land Rover is a manufacturer British Automobile top-of-the-range, specialized in the cross-country vehicles and others SUV. The mark is property of Ford since 2000, after being repurchased by BMW in 1994.
It was founded by Rover. The first named vehicles Land Rover were built during the summer 1947.
For good number of followers of cross-country, the Land is more than one vehicle, it is an art of living. About all the continents and through the years, the Land knew to gain a reputation of justified indestructibility: the fact that 70% of all the Land Rover ever produced are in circulation is enough to prove it.
Genesis
It is after the Second world war, when the British government encouraged its industrialists to find new ideas to start again its exports, that the myth of the Land was born…
Maurice Wilks, chief engineer at Rover, had noticed indeed that the Jeep had been made essential near the civil populations. He then proposed a vehicle commercial, at ease in all the grounds and not very expensive. Because its design was simple: frames in scale, bridges rigid and bolted body. But the steel shortage prohibiting the production of such a body with large scales, Rover had the brilliant idea to turn to aeronautical aluminum to equip its frames. April 30th, 1948 the first Land is presented to the Motor-show of Amsterdam.
Land Rover Series, of 1948 to our days
In 60 years of production, the vehicle with the well-known square lines of the lion cubs and elephant calves of the whole world strongly evolved/moved, while preserving its aspect sui generis : panels of Body out of aluminum on framework out of steel, short or long frame, covered, covered with sheet metal, glazed or Station Coach. He knew until now 4 generations: series I (1949-1958), Series II (1958-1973), Series III (1973-1983), and Series IV, called Defender since 1989 (1983-…).
Series I
Old man, antiquated, obsolete… but also an extraordinary general-purpose machine, whose robustness is put to the test in the whole world.
The mechanism " coil libre" replace the manual selection two or four driving wheels since 1950.
Then the frame lengthened, the cubic capacity passed to 2 liters and the power to 52ch as from 1953, but the body with the flat sides (see example on image opposite) remains unchanged. The concept and the general line of the Land were fixed for always.
Series II
1958: The tenth birthday of the mark is celebrated by the arrival of Series II. Though very similar to their predecessors, the 88 and the 109 appear finished better, less mechanic that first. Appearance of the body current, bulkier than the preceding one, with side bulge over the entire length of the case; calender out of metal netting. They, moreover, are equipped with the 2,25 liters in version gasoline or diesel, last evolution of the precedent 2 liters.
In 1959 the 25000ème Land Rover leaves the chains of Solihull. And in 1966 is with the turn of the 50000ème Land to be celebrated.
1967: Land 109 is equipped (in option) with one 6 cylinders 2,6l of 83ch.
1968: The headlights, hitherto placed in front of the radiator, emigrate towards the tips of wings and of special are born.
Series III
1971: The torch is taken again by Series III and the 75000ème unit is produced. Not really a revolution, but a sensitive evolution: new plastic grill, hinges punts, new instrument panel (the instruments are finally vis-a-vis the driver!) new suspension and synchronized gear box….
When the production of Series III ceases in 1985, more than one million vehicles left the workshops Solihull since the appearance of Series I in 1948.
NB: current the Santana PS10 produces by the Spanish manufacturer Santana motor is a derivative of the Land Rover Serie III , which had been licensed product in Spain, by this firm.
Series IV ( Ninety and One Ten ), then Defender
It is the fourth and the most famous generation of Land Rover, appeared in 1983-1984, to replace the valorous models " III" series;.
The evolution is remarkable compared to Series III: helical springs offering a better comfort and a capacity of crossing increased, disc brakes with before (what was not luxury) and a power-assisted steering of series. Aesthetically, this model was different by a more fluid grill, a Pare-brise in only one part and expanders of wings with before and to the back.
Put besides that, the general line remained identical to the " restyling" from 1958 (!) and, the choice of body remains the same one: covered, covered with sheet metal, record player and station coach.
The first model of the range was the long frame (1983), followed frame runs (1984). But the motorization was still not brilliant since it took again antiquated the 4 cylinders 2,25l (two liters a quarter) gasoline or diesel and V8 3,5l.
As of June 1984, the diesel evolved to a block 4 cylinders of 2,5l. However, its higher cubic capacity did not enable him to develop more than 67ch de la version 2l 1/4, it provided on the other hand slightly more couple. It is him which was used as a basis for the 2,5l turbo diesel, installed as of October 1986. The Clerc's Office of this turbocompressor (Garret AiResearch T2) made pass the engine output of 67 to 85ch.
1990 carry the mourning of 2,5l TD
The very new engine 200 Tdi having proved reliable on the Discovery since 1989, it was established successfully on the Land in 1990. The animal was metamorphosed and baptized by it Defender. The flexibility was added to its legendary qualities of recoveries. By adopting (in 1994) the ultimate evolution of the engine 200 Tdi called 300 Tdi, as well as the new R380 gear box, Defender with asset qualities of a modern vehicle while keeping a strong personality. The engine became nervous but also economic, the box specifies and fast and the silhouette remains that of the Land, inimitable.
The new def May 2007
While keeping its inimitable esthetics a new model left in May 2007 the new def with a new engine Ford origin a 2,4l turbo diesel to slope common a box six and one new interior with seats vis-a-vis the road much more comfortable than the side benchesModels of Land Rover cars currently on sale
