Islands of the West

The islands of the West are the regrouping of fifteen island S Frenchwomen of the littoral of the Manche and the Atlantic Ocean answering three precise requirements:

to have a population in a permanent way.
to have a statute of local government agency (Common in general).
not to be not attached to the continent by a fixed bond (sinkable bridge or road).

Association

The purpose of association “the islands of the West” is to maintain the communities insular active. It was created in April 1971 and it works with the promotion and the protection of the islands in accordance with its statutes:

“… Article 2 - Association has the aim of making all useful provisions to fight against the handicaps common or specific to the islands of the West. It lays down the objective to ensure economic, social and cultural promotion their inhabitants while contributing to insular environmental protection… ”

It comprises three specific colleges:

representatives of the common islanders and general advisers of the cantons, deputies of the districts and senators of the departments concerned.
representatives of the community activities
the territorial collectivities partners

It is equipped with a consequent annual budget (186 000 € in 2004), by the common islanders (20%), the departments (13%), and especially the Area Brittany and FEDER (European regional development fund) (33% each one).

A board of directors:

technical and administrative support for the assembly of the files near the Communes and any carrier of project.
actions of collective tourist promotion in relation to the insular OTSI.
animation and coordination of the initiatives to sensitize and find the solutions appropriate to the specific problems of the islands of the West and insularity, at the national and European level….
