Islands of Lérins
The islands of Lérins are island S of the the Mediterranean, located vis-a-vis the Commune Frenchwoman of Cannes of which they form administratively part in the the Alpes-Maritimes. Gentilé: Lériniens.
Description
They form an archipelago made up of:- the island Holy-Marguerite (largest), overflowed in the East by
- the small island of Tradelière, uninhabited.
- the island Saint-Honorat where is a monastery and some churches of the 5th century; overflowed in the East by
- the small island Saint-Ironwood, uninhabited.
History
The monastery of the Saint-Honorat island is founded towards 400-410 by Honorat of Arles (holy Honorat). It is about the oldest monastery of Occident. It formed a great number of bishops with 5th and 6th centuries of which Saint Patrick, the evangelist of the Ireland. These islands are also famous to have been the prison of enigmatic the Masque of iron.Under the Revolution, the islands of Lérins were called islands Marat and Lepeletier , these two martyrs of the novel ideas (they have both perished assassinated), replacing holy and a Saint of Christianity.
