Islands Rajah Ampat
The archipelago Indonesia N of the Rajah Ampat (" four rois" in Malayan language ) is located close to the north-western coast of the New Guinea. It consists of some 1.500 islands, often mountainous, of which largest are Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool. The total surface area of the archipelago is approximately 46.000 km ².
The archipelago is located at the Western limit of the ocean Pacifique. The majority of its islands is pressed on the continental shelf of the Sahul.
The Rajah Ampat belong to the province of Western New Guinea, detached from the province of Papua in 2003. The archipelago then gained the statute of kabupaten (department). The census of 2001 indicates a population of 47.771 people.
Environment
The Rajah Ampat are located in the " Triangle of Corail" , world heart of the Biodiversity Coral ienne, and in a sea which perhaps contains the richest diversity of coral species (75% according to The Nature Conservancy) known in the world.
