Island with the Birds
The island with the Birds is small a island in the center of the Bassin of Arcachon.
Presentation
Among the various assumptions, it would be either an old bench of Sable, or the remainders of high a Dune forged by the wind and the currents marine whose base would have been fixed on its current site during time. Its average Superficie is approximately 300 Hectare S with high tide, and of more than: 3000 with low tide.
History
The island was used formerly for the inhabitants of the basin (who went there in Nage ant from the closest villages: Claouey or Small Piquey) of place of pasturage for the herds of Cow S then of horses. At the time of Tempête S (in particular those of 1714 and 1882) the island was submerged and the decimated animals and the cultures. The island then became a ground of gathering, Chasse and fishing (activities very strictly regulated today) arranged with tons (huts of huntings), pond S, fresh water puit, then the tchanquées huts (of the tchanque word , which means stilt in Gascon, become symbols of the island and the basin) and of the parks Ostréicole S. Since the beginning of the 20th century, there exist regular excursions in Bateau X since Arcachon. Many yachtmen also go there.
Anecdote
The song Tombé for it from Pascal Obispo has as a subtitle the Island with the Birds (album One day like today ).
