Island of the City

The island of the City is a island located on the the Seine, in the center of Paris.

History

In 52 av. J. - C., at the time of the fight between Vercingétorix and Jules César, a small tribe Celte named the Parisii lived in the surroundings. It was thought a long time that Parisii had settled on the island of the City. Today, the historians lean rather for other assumptions. Parisii could indeed very well have settled a little further, with the mouth of the Bièvre, either on another island now disappeared, or on the peninsula formed by the mouth of the Beaver, on left bank.

Three buildings of the medieval time are still today on the island of the City:

Geography

The island of the City has three public gardens: the Public garden of Green-Gallant the on the Western point, the public garden of the Île-de-France on the point Is, and the public garden Jean XXIII around Notre-Dame. For these public gardens, it is necessary to add four places: the place of the Pont-Neuf, the Dauphine place (behind the law courts), the Square Notre-Dame, and the place Louis-Lépine where the flower market is.

The quays of the island are divided into six parts: in North quays of the Clock and Corsica, and the quay with the Flowers, the South quays of the Goldsmiths and Market-Nine, and in the East the quay of the Archbishop's palace.

In addition to the boulevard of the Palate, the island includes/understands also ten streets:

  • the street Henri-Robert (behind the Law courts)

  • the street of Harlay (behind the Law courts)
  • the street of Lutèce
  • the street of the City
  • the street of Arcole
  • the street of the Cloister-Our-Lady
  • the street Chanoinesse
  • the street of the Dove
  • the street of Ursins
  • the street of the Cantors
On the administrative level, the boulevard of the Palate delimits the border between the 1 {{er}} district (in the West) and the 4 {{E}} district (in the East).
