Island of the Bowl

The island of the Bowl is an island of the the Seine, 2 km length approximately, located in the Hauts-de-Seine between Neuilly-sur-Seine and Levallois-Perret on the one hand, and Courbevoie on the other hand. It is attached administratively to the commune of Neuilly-sur-Seine for its greater part and to that of Levallois-Perret in its northern point (point downstream).

Geography and history

The island of the Bowl is crossed by two Pont S truck drivers, the Pont of Levallois to its northern point, and the bridge Marshal-June formerly called bridge of Courbevoie in its medium.

This island was made famous for a table of the painter Georges Seurat, One Sunday afternoon in the Island of the Large Bowl , exposed for the first time in May 1886 (table acquired by the Art Institute off Chicago in 1924).

The etymology of the name is dubious. It could be a question of the term employed by the minors to indicate a boat, the island having indeed the shape of a boat. The poets evoke the girandole, a whole of visible water jets on the basins.

The island of the Bowl, formerly called island of the Large-Bowl, is a residential district. One finds there several public gardens of which the garden of the temple of the Love, located at the point upstream (southern) of the island and connected to the Right Bank (Neuilly-sur-Seine) by a footbridge, and the park of the island of the Bowl, located in the point downstream (northern), where Ruche rs and the international museum of the the Seine are.
