Island of Wight
The island of Wight is an island which is located on the southern part of the England (the United Kingdom) in the Manche, opposite the towns of Southampton and Portsmouth. During the creation of the councils of counties in 1888, the Island of Wight was attached to the county of Hampshire, but, since 1890, following a campaign carried out by the inhabitants, the island was set up in independent county.
Geography
The island, of a massive form near to a regular rhombus of 20 side km, has a surface of 381 km ². It has the statute of a County and a population of 134.876 inhabitants (2002). Its administrative capital is Newport. She enjoys a strong tourist activity because of her climate and her Plage S.principal Cities :
In the west of the island precarious chalk rocks, the “Needles are”, on which a Phare is. Maximum altitude is 241m, at the top St Boniface Down. There are several important rivers, of which the Medina and the Yar, which are jetent in the Solent.
History
The name Wight comes from the Latin Vectis (which is translated like lever or grip with lever or bolt) through the Anglo-Saxon Wiht . It seems that the Romans conceived it like the key of entry in the Britannia . It is certain that later, it thus was seen. According to the English law of the Middle Ages, it was particularly necessary for the islanders to practice their talents as regards the arc. The kings were afraid to see it taken by a foreign force which could have been increased in the island before attacking the country in general. It is such a consideration which made build the Military Road. (See photo Ci against.)With the fall of the Roman Empire, they are the Jutes, from the inhabitants of what was going to become Denmark, which came to colonize the island and the part of Hampshire opposite.
More recently, a festival of music is held there, initiated as from the years 1968,1969 and 1970. Among the artists who occurred there, one can quote The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen, Bryan Adams, The Darkness, David Bowie, the Manic Street Preachers, R.E.M.
Others
- it is with Cowes that develop the first demonstrations of a use of leisure and sporting of the veil. Elisabeth I {{Re}} made there build a pleasure boat and in 1815 under the regency of the Prince regent creates for itself the Royal Yachting Club.
- the island of Wight is famous for the many regattas which proceed there, and especially for that which in 1851 was at the origin of the creation of the Coupe of America.
- Several famous festivals of pop music was held there into 1968,1969 and largest of its time the festival of 1970 with 600,000 spectators. Since 2002, the festivals began again, with a less multitude, and of an official sponsor except at the time of the edition of 2007.
- Michel Delpech helps it evoked the island in its song Wight is Wight like Beatles in When I' m Sixty-Furnace .
