Island of San Giorgio Maggiore

The Island of San Giorgio Maggiore , sometimes called in Saint-Georges-Major French, , is a island of Venice, located vis-a-vis the Palais of the Doges, with the entry of the Grand Channel.

History

Moine S Bénédictin S settle there as of the 8th century. Because of its strategic position, the Island will play a big role in the trade.

Monuments and Art

The Basilica Saint-Georges-Major, created by the Architect Andrea Palladio between 1566 and 1580, where is the last meal , painting of Tintoret (painted between 1592 and 1594).

It is for the refectory of the Monastère of the Bénédictin S of San Giorgio Maggiore that Véronèse painted (1562 - 1563) its Wedding at Cana, table that Napoleon Bonaparte stole to Italian in 1797 and who is now with the Musée of Louvre to Paris.
