The island of Montreal , in the south-west of the Quebec to the Canada, is with the confluence of the Fleuve the St. Lawrence and the Rivière of Outaouais. In the beginning, it was called " island of the Royal" Mount; , then as of the 17th century its current name was adopted, by double deformation of French into English then of English into French. In 1603, Samuel de Champlain came to visit the island as an assistant of François Gravé, sior of the Bridge. The island of Montreal east one of the islands of the Archipelago of Hochelaga.
The island of Montreal counts in 2007 close to: 2000000 inhabitants, including approximately the three quarters (1 600.000 in fact) for the only town of Montreal. This small island gathers almost the quarter of the total population of the Quebec and forms one of the 17 administrative Régions of Quebec: it at the same time one of the two smallest Areas of Quebec (smallest in surface being that of Laval) and especially is populated.
57% of the inhabitants of the island of Montreal are French-speaking , 25% are allophones and 18% are anglophone , especially concentrated in the west of the island. It is more the low level of French-speaking people among the 17 Québécois Areas. The French is nevertheless the common language on the island, i.e. most used by the whole of the inhabitants of any origines: 96% have a good knowledge of the French language, all confused linguistic groups. The island is about 50 km long and 16 km at its broadest point. It has 266,6 km of banks.
