Island of Lamèque
The island of Lamèque (47° 48 ' North, 64° 35 ' 0uest) is located at the north-eastern point of the New Brunswick to the Canada.
Description
The island covers a surface of approximately 150 km ². It is connected to the south, the town of Shippagan by a bridge and, in north, the island Miscou by the bridge of Miscou. The two islands separate the Baie from Heats of the Golfe of the St. Lawrence. The fishing and the extraction of the peat of Sphaigne are the principal economic activities of the area.
Old territory of the Intrigues, the island of Lamèque is now populated almost entirely of Acadiens. The town of Lamèque (1 580 H in 2001) is the principal agglomeration of the island. Several other small towns are located around the island of which the village of Holy-Marie-Saint-Raphaël; Cape-boat, where the sea carves sandstone cliffs continuously; and Holy-Cecile, whose church, inside multicoloured and with excellent acoustic qualities is the principal site of the International festival of Baroque music of Lamèque. One finds there also the hamlets of Slope Road, Pigeon Hill, Point-Alexandre, Small-Lamèque, Point-Boat, Small-River-in-the Ile, Small-Shippagan, Chiasson Office, Haut-Lameque and Savoy Landing.
The Island of Lamèque is very a good place to practice sports like the Planche with veil, the Kitesurf and the Snowkite.
