Island of Capraia

Capraia is an island of 335 inhabitants (the Capraiesi ) of the Province of Leghorn. It is with 64 km of Leghorn, to 37 km of Gorgona and to 31 km of the Corsica . Its surface is of 19 km. It counts a commune: Capraia Insulated

Description

Of volcanic origin, it is the third larger island of the Archipel Tuscan after the isle of Elba and Isola del Giglio. It was closed with the public until 1986 because of the presence of a penal settlement. Its mule tracks are snuffed by the hikers and its maquis shelters an exceptional fauna, with, in others, of the Mouflon S and the colonies of crested cormorants. The access to the 19 square kilometers of the island remains limited because of the protection of the site.

The fort San Giorgio was occupied by the Pisans then the Gênois. It is a private field today.

It currently forms part of the National park of the Archipelago Tuscan made up of seven islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

History

In the past called Aegylon, (Αηγυλον) by the Greeks, Caprara by the Romans, with the Moyen-âge it was the base of the Saraceni pirates. It was dominated by Pisans, Gênois and the Corsicans before belonging to the Royaume of Sardinia. After the Second world war, it was a place of detention for a long time. The penal settlement was closed in 1986.
