Island of Anticosti
The island of Anticosti is a natural island of the Golfe of the St. Lawrence located at broad of the Gaspésie, vis-a-vis Harbor-Saint-Pierre, with the Quebec. It is separated from the Coast-North by the Jacques-Cartier strait and from the Gaspésie by the strait of Honguedo.
Anticosti is the largest island of Quebec with 7900 km ², that is to say a size comparable with the Corsica , long 222 km length for 16 to 48 km broad, it is larger than the Canadian province of the Island-of-Prince-Edouard), but very slightly populated (264 inhabitants in 1991), mainly in the village of Port-Menier, on the western point of the island. It is accessible by boat starting from Seven-Islands or Rimouski. One can also go there by plane, starting from Seven-Islands, Mount-Pretty Harbor-Saint-Pierre or . The port and the airport are located at Port-Menier. The island is managed by the municipality of Island-in Anticosti.
History
Since hundreds of years, the Amerindian of the continent used the island as zone of hunting. The Innus called it Notiskouan , which results in where the bears are driven out and the Micmacs called it before ground . The island was discovered in 1534 by Jacques Cartier. In 1680, the first colonists arrive and the seigniory of the archipelago Mingan and the island were offered to Louis Jolliet by Louis XIV in reward of its exploration of the the Mississippi. Size of the quarter of Belgium, it is the largest island to be had by a private individual. To died of Louis Jolliet, the island was bequeathed to his/her three children who separated themselves some following a long lawsuit. After the British conquest , the island was annexed in 1763 by the colony of Ground-New-and-Labrador and joined the Canada in 1774.
No development was followed from there except the construction of three headlights. In 1874, a built-in company tries to establish a many population, but it was a fiasco. It is only starting from 1895 that the island experienced really its development.
With this date, it was sold to the rich person chocolate seller Henri Menier at the cost of 125000 dollars which made of them a hunting preserve and personal fishing. With this intention, it introduced there 220 stags of Virginia. This one made build the Bay Holy-Claire village, named in the honor of his/her mother. Then, considering the great difficulty for the boats of accosting there because of the reef , level stretch of rock advancing sometimes with a few kilometers of bank, Henri Menier makes move all the village with a score of kilometers from there. Port-Menier is born and its founder equipped it for fishing with fish while waiting to be able to exploit of them the mining and forest resources as well as the peat. With his death in 1913, his/her Gaston brother inherits the island. Judging not very profitable, it sells it in Wayagamack Pulp and Paper Company in 1926.
In 1974, the island is repurchased by the Gouvernement of Quebec for approximately 25 million $. Today, the principal village, Port-Menier, account nearly 250 inhabitants.
Fauna
The Cerf of Virginia there was introduced and multiplied on the island, which is recognized for its hunting (higher success rate to hunting for the stag of Virginia in North America, with more than 85%. The population of stag of Virginia is estimated at: 166,000, whereas that of the moose does not exceed: 1,000. The Société of the establishments of outdoor of Quebec (SEPAQ) manages on the island of vast territories for hunting and fishing as well as the National park of Anticosti. It is today a paradise for the paleontologist S, the ornithologists, the hikers, the Chasse the fishing USSR and with the line. The island is particularly appraisal of the States-Uniens.
