The Île Madam is a French island located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of the Charente-Maritime, Southern bank of the estuary of the Charente, between Fouras in north, the island of Oléron in the south, the island of Aix in the west and the small oyster port of Port-des-Barques in the east.
It is smallest of the 4 Charente-native islands, which are by order of size decreasing: the island of Oléron, the Ile de Ré, the island of Aix and the island Madam. Like its neighbors, it is administratively in the department of the Charente-Maritime, in the area Poitou-Charentes.
The island Madam is an any small island of 1 km on 600 m, to low Marée it is connected to the ground by a way of sand and rollers called the Passe with the Oxen . History
It would hold its name is of Anne de Rohan de Soubise , mistress of Louis XIV or the abbess of the abbey to the Ladies of Saintes which carried the title of: Madam de Saintes . She was also called the island of Garenne undoubtedly because of the abundance of the rabbits of the same name, which were its only inhabitants. Under the Revolution, the island was called the island Citoyenne .
