Island-with-Monks

The Island-with-Monks is a common French, located in the department of the Morbihan and the area Brittany.

It is the largest island of the Golfe of Morbihan and one of the two only ones which are a commune (the other being the Île of Arz).

The name Breton of the commune is Izenah .

Its inhabitants name the Ilois and Iloises.

Etymology

It was successively called Crialeis (“short cross”) then Enez manac' H (“island with the monk”) (C-W communication of the 11th century: “ Enest Manach ”). Its current Breton name, Enizenac' H , is a contraction of Enez manac' H .

Geography

The Island-with-Monks is located in the Golfe of Morbihan. It is 7 km long on 5 broad for a surface of 310 ha. Its form is that of a cross and no point of the island is located at more than 450 m of the sea.

One can reach it in particular since the port of Larmor-Baden or into 5 min. since Port-White.

  • the Conservatoire of the littoral acquired in 1980 the southernmost point of the island, the point of Penhap which is managed by the commune.

It is a site protected because of its vegetation of the Mediterranean type.

History

The Island-with-Monks is inhabited since the Neolithic time as the still visible dolmens as well as other vestiges attest it. Traces of occupation at the time Gallo-Roman were also discovered with the borough.

In 854, the king of Brittany Erispoë made of it gift with the abbey of Saint-Conwoïon of Redon (created by his father, Nominoë. It is used then as attic for the abbey.

After the invasions Normans of the 10th century, the island is attached to the parish of Arradon.

In 1453, it was high with the row of parish. 1543, it is set up in Trève. TO CHECK -->

In 1792, it becomes a commune under the francized name of island to the monks .

Traditionally, the young girls had the right to choose themselves their husband because the economy of the island rested largely on their shoulders, because of the great number of sailors to the long course provided by the island.

  • Several vestiges megalithic (dolmens,…) remain on the southern point:
    • the Cromlech of Kergonan, in the middle of the island of a ray of more than 70 mêtres is one of largest of Europe,
    • the Dolmen of Penhap, located at the south with 5 kilometers of the borough is best preserved island,
  • One finds martyrdoms with the points of Trec' H, Brouel and Nioul like while arriving at the hamlet of Kerno.
  • the vault Saint Michel at the exit of the borough in direction of north presents some Ex-voto S to Sainte Anne.
