At the time of the Carolingian Mérovingiens and , with died of a king, the kingdom was divided between each one of its sons. The Treasury and the private goods of the sovereign, indeed, merged: that was explained mainly by the fact why the concept of State - which did not exist at the German ones - had been lost since the fall of the Roman Empire. It is only later that the rule changed and that only one heir was designated, whereas the statute law made a return and that the State reappeared.

In addition, the concept of France appeared only very gradually during the centuries. Some consider that one can even speak about France only starting from the Traité of Verdun which would be also at the origin of the Germany (843), starting from the accession of Hugues Capet with the capacity (987), or later. One will follow here the tradition of the elementary schools to France, which makes go up the origin of the country to the unification of the Francs. Indeed, the frank State then later French existed without discontinuity since 486 until our days, and France of today is for this reason the heiress of the frank kingdom of Clovis.

The present list comprises kings mérovingiens who reigned only on part of France or his totality. The name of the kings of Neustrie or Austrasie is thus written in Italic . The kings of Paris however had a certain preeminence and historiography retains them as kings de France (even if the title exists only as from the 13th century).

This list comprises also the monarchs " théoriques" , i.e. not having never exerted their power. The latter have their name between brackets.
