Isla de Aves

The Isla de Aves (in French, Island with the birds) is an small island of the the Antilles 375 m length for 50 m broad. It is located at 110 km in the west of the Guadeloupe and the Dominique (). Its culminating point is only with 4 meters with the top of the sea level and the cyclones can submerge it. The place is dangerous, of many boats were failed there. Into 1980, the Allen hurricane divided the island into two however it could be reunified by pushes back Corail.

The island probably was discovered in 1584 by Avaro Sanzze. Thereafter, Spaniards, English, Portuguese and Dutchmen asserted it. Since 2004, the naval forces of the Venezuela maintain a garrison there, to 370 km of their coasts. Moreover this island belongs to the Federal Dépendances Venezuela. But the Dominique question their presence. According to a convention of 1982, of which Venezuela is not signatory, a small island cannot be asserted beyond the territorial limit of the 12 miles (22 km).

Isla de Aves is a sandy island with Juste a little vegetation. It is a place of reproduction for the green marine Oiseaux and tortoises - Chelonia mydas . Of 1878 with 1912, Americans exploited the Guano until exhausting the reserves of the island.

Marine erosion could make disappear the island from here a few tens of years.
