Ischia

The island of Ischia , of the Sémitique I-schra meaning black Île , whose old name is Pithécusses ( the island with the Singe S makes in refers to a type of Céramique sinks), is located in Tyrrhenian Sea, in the north of the gulf of Naples. It has a surface of 47  km ² for 39  Kilometer S length and a population bordering the 50  000 inhabitants.

History and Geography

It is a ic island Volcan formed by the lava of the Époméo, which culminates with 780 Mètre S of altitude, and whose terrible eruptions were prolonged until the 14th century. The mythology claims that the Géant Typhée is locked up there. It is still shaken earthquakes; that of July 28th 1833 made 4  there; 000 victims. It however over-populated since antiquity, and is produced excellent wines, oranges, olive-trees and fruits. The tourists are attracted there by imposing landscapes, the rocks, the cave of Punta della Parata , the splendid pine forests. It belongs to the marine and tourist hydro-thermo-climatic stations most re-elected Italy and world.

Some agree today to make of it the island of the Phéaciens, in the place of Corcyre, current Corfou. It is on its banks that Ulysses would have met Nausicaa. Towards 770 av. J. - C., the Greek colonists coming from the towns of Chalcis and Érétrie, in the island of Eubée, settle on the island of Ischia which they undoubtedly call Pithécuse in reference to the presence of monkeys on his rocks, unless it is not because of the clean Argile dark in the island, and there found a city of the same name before founding under the demographic pressure, the colony of Cumes, whose descendants founded in their turn, under the control of Aristodemos the town of Naples in 478 front J. - C. With the the Middle Ages, the island knows the regular incursions and devastators of the Barbarians then Buckwheats. Until 1300, Ischia is politically and economically independent of the kingdom of Naples, but subjected to Aragonese Sicily.

In 1707, the kingdom of Naples passes to the Autrichien S and Ischia is thus seen imposing an Austrian governor, the count de Martiniz. In 1734, Ischia passes with Naples under the domination of the Bourbons and is managed by governors of the king residing at the Aragonese castle.

In February 1825, the island knows a terrible earthquake which destroys the town of Casamicciola. At the end of the domination bourbonienne of the Kingdom of Deux-Siciles, in 1862, the island is definitively attached to the province of Naples, become from now on a city of the kingdom of Italy.

To see

  • the Port of Ischia
It is the principal city of the island. One finds the greatest number of inhabitants as well as the greatest number of hotels. The city is located around a lake formed in an old volcanic crater. The Aragonese castle located on a close small island is to be visited (possible visit in season).
  • Lacco Ameno
It is about the thermal spa most important of the island. One finds a big number of luxury hotels there. In bay a rock emerging in the mushroom shape is called Fungho .
  • Forio
Forio is a small town on the Western coast of Ischia. She is very appreciated artists and opens more and more largely with tourism. The area of Forio is considered to produce the best wines of the island.
  • San Angelo
It is about a small island completely in the south of Ischia which is connected to the island by an isthmus. San Angelo is still a village of fishermen where there is no motor vehicle traffic. Since San Angelo, there is a splendid sight as well on the sea as on the surrounding heights. There is in addition a very beautiful beach.
