Isao Takahata

Isao Takahata () is a Réalisateur Japanese of cartoons (Anime). It owes its notoriety mainly with its film the Tomb of the fireflies left in 1988.

Biography

Born with Ise (Japan) the October 29th 1935, Isao Takahata studied the French literature with the Université of Tōkyō. That enabled him to discover the poems of Jacques Prévert but also the work of this last near Paul Grimault, for example on the scenario of the Shepherdess and the chimney sweeper .

It joined as of 1959 the studios of animation Toei douga, and in 1968 it carries out its first feature-length film Horus, prince of the Sun (left to France in 2004), on which also Hayao Miyazaki works. This film did not obtain awaited success, and the producers choose from now on to rather privilege creation bound for the television than of the cinema. Since this project, Miyazaki and Takahata often worked together, on films as on series TV (in particular the first series of Lupin III , more known in France under the name of Edgar detective-burglar ).

For Takahata and Miyazaki, the trilogy of Heidi , Marco , and Anne de Green Gables in 1974 - 1979 was a work of the golden age, but it was also the work which left the pleasant combination dissolve. Since Miyazaki came to have the time taken by composition of the screen for Takahata which adheres to mask the composition, Takahata came to negotiate with the majority of the direction. Takahata adheres even to the details, such as the distance from the entry of a door to a table, or furniture of the part, etc places it, and directs a work based on him. By the result, the relations of Takahata and Miyazaki which were common creator changed for the relations with a director and the organizer which constituted the screen simply. Consequently, Miyazaki almost does not say anything another about Marco which is known as to be supreme masterpiece in the work of two people, who a revision with the direction of Takabata. Although the production was on the way, in Anne de Green Gables , that Miyazaki resigned. However, their ordinary relations did not change. Takahata helped with production of Conan the son of the future to help Miyazaki which was occupied. Then, Miyazaki also invited Takahata with Studio Ghibli.

In 1981, Kié the small plague of film that Takahata directed gained a favorable reception and the televised series were made. That was wide in the audience to estimate having been high and followed for three years.

In 1985, Takahata becomes one of the two realizers, with Miyazaki, within the Studio Ghibli created by the Tokuma company and directed by Toshio Suzuki. In 1988, it carries out its first film for this studio, the Tomb of the fireflies . Since, three other full-length films followed, all very different.

Contrary to Miyazaki, Takahata does not draw itself. He is considered before just like a realizer. He carried out besides a film in catches of real sights, the History of the channel of Yanagawa in 1987. This characteristic enables him not to be attached to a style of drawing in particular, and to try out various techniques ( My neighbors Yamada was entirely created on computer in order to obtain an effect of watercolour difficult to obtain on Cellulo S).

One also notes a great diversity in the style of the covered subjects: while the Tomb of the fireflies is a drama of the war presented in a very realistic way, Pompoko tends more towards the burlesque one by presenting Tanuki which try to prevent the human ones from settling on their grounds.

Very often, Isao Takahata is based on a preexistent work to create its films: novel (of Akiyuki Nosaka for the Tomb of the fireflies , Kenji Miyazawa for Goshu the violoncellist ) or Manga for Memories drop by drop or My neighbors Yamada . It can also develop an original idea as it did for Pompoko (the war of the tanuki ).

Isao Takahata would have left the structure of the Studio Ghibli after the realization of My neighbors Yamada , even if it is always paid. According to Hayao Miyazaki itself, there is little chance that it causes production of its next films by the studio.
