Isabelle d\' Este

Isabelle d' Este was noble a Italy born the May 18th 1474 with Ferrare and dead the February 13rd 1539 with Mantoue.
It was, like her younger sister Béatrice, one of the principal women of the Italian Renaissance and a cultural and political figure important. Bound by the birth or marriage to the nobility of Spain, it remained famous like First lady of the Rebirth .

Biography

It is the girl of Hercules I {{er}} of Este, duke of Ferrare, Modena and Reggio of Emilie, and Éléonore of Naples, itself girl of Ferdinand I {{er}} of Naples and Isabel de Claremont. His/her younger sister is Béatrice d' Este which married the duke of Milan, Ludovic Sforza.

She is hardly six years old that a marriage contract is signed, the May 28th 1480, between the Este and the Gonzague, contract which it “is engaged” to the oldest son of the marquis Frederic I {{er}} of Mantoue and Marguerite of Bavaria, Francois, then thirteen years old. The negotiator mantouan found that more than its beauty, its intelligence and its talent is admirable (più che the bellezza E mirabile the intelletto E the ingegno suo) .
She thus married, in Mantoue, the February 12th 1490, fifteen years old, François II, old of twenty-three years, which is, since 1484, marquis de Mantoue.
They had eight children together.

As of its entry in the town of Mantoue, the mantouans are dazzled by its refinement. On its side, it fell immediately under the charm from the court mantouane. One month after its arrival, she writes with her father: “ I already took as well love at this city, as I cannot not take care of the respect and the interests of the townsmen (Io Ho già preso tanto amore has questa città, che not posso fare che not piglia cleaned Li honori and Li citadini utilitate) ”. Its contribution was determining for the advent of a new fertile cultural climate. Of a very sure taste, it was demanding the patron of an important court of musiciens.
and men of letters Isabella spent of the enormous sums for its atours and its jewels, so that it became a reference for the western world as regards mode, of good manners, make-up and beauty.

It was also extremely skilful and advised in policy, having several times to assume the regency of the State during the many absences of her husband, in particular during the very delicate period of the captivity of François II in Venise.
Its charismatic address in the request enabled him to obtain, in 1527, the crimson cardinalice for his/her Ercole son and, in 1533, dignity Duc ale for his son Frederic.
Actually, behind the frontage all in beauty and femininity, hid a heart impavide that no obstacle could stop. She wrote on her own subject: “ Même in our sex finds a virile nature (nostro Etiam nel sesso if ritrovano animi virili) . ”

François II died in 1519, at age the 52 years and she survived to him twenty years. She died in 1539 old of 64 ans.

Descent

From its marriage with François II, were born eight children:
  • Éléonore de Mantoue (1493-1550) which will marry in 1507 François Marie I {{er}} della Rovere, duke of Urbin;
  • Margherita (1496-1496);
  • Frederic which will be the 5th marquis then 1st duke of Mantoue, titrated Frederic II;
  • Livia (1501-1508);
  • Ippolita (1503-1570) which will be nun with Mantoue;
  • Ercole (1505-1563) which will be bishop of Mantoue in 1521 then cardinal in 1527 and which will be one of the presidents of the Concile of Thirty;
  • Ferdinand (Shoeing) which will be the 1st count of Guastalla and chief of the line of Gonzague de Guastalla;
  • Paola (1508-1569) which will be nun franciscaine in Mantoue.

Anecdotes

  • the ambassadors, in visit with Mantoue, received the mission of their kings of making drawings of clothing and jewels which carried Isabelle. These drawings were intended to be reproduced, with their return, the use of the kings who elected them.
  • Isabelle was one of the first women to carry pants; she tells, in a letter in Castiglione, a mishap to the court whereas a estrade on which the ladies of the court are collapses lamentably and that all these beautiful people find “the legs in the air (gamba ale aria)”; she writes: “ all the others made a superb spectacle, which were without pants; we, by chance, had we them. (tutte the altre fecero uno bellissimo vedere, che erano senza calzoni; noi per fortuna Li avevamo.)
  • Arétin, its enemy relentless, describes it: “ archi-malhonnêtement made up, ebony teeth and ivory lash (arcidisonestamente imbellettata, I denti of ebano and the ciglia of avorio).
